The Anatomy of Your Favorite Flannel

Updated: Apr 29

You know that flannel shirt you always reach for in your closet? I've been selling flannels for over 8 years and I think I have a pretty good idea why it's considered your "favorite".

Maybe your grandpa wore it all the time and it reminds you of him. Or your dad retired his old flannel and you adopted it. It could be your significant other's flannel that somehow always ends up on your side of the closet. There's a common theme, and I've broken it down:

  • Men's/unisex flannel for a looser fit: Men's shirts are designed to accommodate their broader shoulders and larger arms. This makes them extra comfy to wear as women because it feels like it just drapes over us; not too tight in the arms which can be an issue with women's flannels. Idk about you but I wear flannel to be comfy.

  • 100% cotton for the softest feel: Cotton is a natural fiber that will slowly break down over time; the more it's worn the softer it gets. Other fabrics can shrink in a funky way, ball-up easily, or are just straight up itchy. None of that sounds good.

  • Used & perfectly worn in: Someone wore that shirt often and broke-in the fabric, so it came to you pre-shrunk and soft. Perfect.

  • Longer sleeves: I have a hard time finding women's flannels with good arm length, I know I can't be the only one.

  • "Tail" in the back: The tail gives a little extra length in the back so you can wear it with leggings or as a bathing suit coverup and have the perfect amount of coverage.

These are all things I keep top of mind when shopping for more inventory. I touch each one to make sure it's soft, check the material contents, inspect it for holes or stains, and check that it has a "tail" in the back before making the purchase to keep inventory consistent. Since selling flannel for over 8 years I've become pretty picky with the used flannels I purchase for you, but the "Soft & Sustainable" model has stayed the same.

Next time you reach into your closet for your favorite flannel, think about what makes it your favorite. Sentimental reasons? Super soft? Let me know in the comments, I'd love to hear what makes it special to you.
